Xinhua news agency, Santiago, Santiago, July (reporter Wang Pei) the China Academy of Sciences South American Astronomical Research Center Tower Longfeng project scientific research office in July 31st in the northern city of Chile Antofagasta unveiled.  

Chinese ambassador to Chile Xu Buhe, President of the northern Catholic University of Chile, unveiled the scientific research office in Jorge Dabiro. Xu Bu said in his speech that Chile is the world's famous "Star State", especially the northern Atacama Desert, which is the most suitable place on earth for astronomical observation. Cooperation in astronomy research is one of the key points in Sino Chile science and technology cooperation.  

The tower Longfeng Observatory, built by the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Catholic University of northern Chile, is located at 2900 meters above sea level. It is about 25 square kilometers. It is about 90 kilometers from the site of ETA French. The observatory is very excellent with the two large Observatory sites of the southern European Observatory. The Research Office of the project is located in the campus of the northern Catholic University in Antofagasta.  

The South American Astronomical Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is the first overseas project to implement the international science and education cooperation expansion project by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It aims to make full use of Chile's advantageous geographical observation advantages to realize the complementary advantages of the two sides and jointly carry out the international first class level of astronomical research.  

The Atacama Desert is world-famous for its excellent astronomical conditions and is well suited for the development of optical and infrared observatories. Both the European and American countries and Japan have built large astronomical telescope facilities here. By 2020, 70% of the world's astronomical observatory facilities are expected to be gathered here. (finish)
