Supercomputing is not advanced and advanced -- Interview with Feng Shengzhong, director of the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen.

China is building an unprecedented 1 billion yuan "superconducting computer" capable of developing new weapons, cracking codes, analyzing intelligence and helping to stem the surge in energy demand, Hong Kong media reported recently.

This news once again attracted the attention of all parties to China's supercomputing development. "Over the past 40 years of reform and opening up, China's supernumeric technology has grown from scratch and gradually developed to the world's leading level. In this process, the scientific spirit of seeking truth and pragmatism of scientific researchers and the mission needed by the country have played an important role." Feng Shengzhong, director of the National Supercomputing Center of Shenzhen, told ScienceDaily.

"Whether the superconducting computers reported by the media or the E-class computers we are developing are driven by scientific laws and national needs, not advanced for the sake of advancement." Feng Shengzhong emphasized.

Science and Technology Daily: Supercomputers are playing an increasingly important role in various fields. As you mentioned earlier, the spirit of science plays an important role in it. Can you elaborate on that?

Feng Shengzhong: The scientific spirit I understand is the rational spirit of seeking truth from facts, seeking truth from facts and being pioneering and innovative. China's supercomputer industry has developed rapidly, and has become as famous as aerospace, high-speed rail and other Chinese business cards. This is the result of persistent exploration and innovation by generations of computer users.

Remember that the western developed countries imposed an embargo policy on China, China tried every means to buy a supercomputer, but to be locked in a "glass house" can only be used under the supervision of foreign sellers, Chinese workers must not touch the core parts of the machine. This is very stimulating for us. Through the arduous efforts of several generations, we now have Shenwei, Galaxy, Dawn series, to some extent, China's supercomputers can compete with developed countries.

Science and Technology Daily: Supercomputers are important theoretical verification tools, through which we often find that the calculation results do not agree with previous theories, at this time, dare to question is particularly important. How do you feel that you are more sensitive to such situations and get original breakthroughs?

Feng Shengzhong: Computation is not only a tool for verification, but also a means of scientific discovery and a fulcrum of technological innovation. Figuratively speaking, the role of computing can be summarized as knowledge discovery, simulation conjecture, verification design, intelligence empowerment and so on. Now the fourth paradigm is data-driven scientific discovery, which is also based on computing.

It is generally believed that computation, theory and experiment are three parallel scientific discovery methods, which complement each other. When the calculated results are not consistent with theoretical inferences and experimental observations, we need to check whether there are loopholes in the calculation, of course, this inconsistency may also be an opportunity for technological innovation. At this time, researchers should insist on bold assumptions, carefully verify, dare to challenge the original theory or conclusion, and seize the possible breakthrough point of innovation. From this point of view, the application of supercomputers is also conducive to promoting the development of positivism among the scientific researchers in China. Computation is the carrier of scientific spirit.

Science and Technology Daily: In the course of the development of supercomputers in China, there are still some different voices. They think that there are duplicate construction and low utilization rate. What do you think?

Feng Shengzhong: Compared with the needs of current economic and social development, infrastructure construction needs to be ahead of schedule. The construction of supercomputers is also true. Of course, because the supercomputer life cycle is less than 10 years, too advanced is also wasteful, the state should increase the overall planning in this regard. But more importantly, attention should be paid to the application of supercomputers. Over the years, the breadth and depth of China's application of supernumeracy have greatly expanded, won two Gordon Bell Awards, but the room for improvement is still very large. In my opinion, we should consider establishing several national centers for the application and innovation of supercomputing technology and increasing the application of supercomputer technology.

This is also the direction our country has been trying hard to calculate the Shenzhen center. Shenzhen, as a city of scientific and technological innovation, has built a large number of top-level scientific research institutions such as Pengcheng Laboratory and Southern University of Science and Technology. They have huge demand for high-performance computing in industry, research and public services. Since its establishment, the Shenzhen Center has made outstanding contributions to Shenzhen and even the whole country in the fields of scientific computing, engineering computing, cloud computing, large data, artificial intelligence and animation rendering. At present, the Center is actively planning to participate in the Ministry of Science and Technology E-level computer research and development projects, the future, E-level supercomputers will Shenzhen International Industrial Science and Technology Innovation Center and Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Dawan District to provide a strong driving force.
